Uncut Gems (2019), directed by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, is pure anxiety from start to finish — and somehow that’s exactly the point. Following a fast-talking jeweler who keeps gambling on bigger and riskier bets, Uncut Gems throws you into chaos and never slows down. It’s loud, messy, stressful, and completely intentional. You don’t really “settle in” to this movie — you survive it.
🎬 THE STORY — ⭐
The story is strong and constantly escalating, but the core idea — a man obsessively chasing a win while everything around him unravels — feels somewhat familiar, especially compared to other A24 character-driven spirals like Marty Supreme. It’s executed at an extremely high level, and the tension never drops, but conceptually it didn’t feel entirely fresh to me. Still very effective — just not groundbreaking.
❤️ THE EMOTION — ⭐⭐
You feel the pressure. You feel the stress. You feel the desperation. Even if you’re not necessarily emotionally attached in a sentimental way, you’re completely locked into the character’s mindset. The tension becomes the emotion. It’s intense in a way that sticks with you.
🎞️ THE PRESENTATION — ⭐⭐
This is where the film really stands out. The pacing is relentless, the sound design adds to the stress, and the camera work keeps everything feeling tight and claustrophobic. It’s controlled chaos — and it’s crafted extremely well.
🎭 THE CHARACTERS — ⭐⭐
The characters feel raw and authentic. The decisions are frustrating at times, but they’re believable within who these people are. That realism makes the chaos feel grounded instead of exaggerated. Everything feels natural, even when it’s spiraling.
🎉 THE OVERALL ENJOYMENT — ⭐
I respect this movie a lot. It’s bold, intense, and very well made. But it’s also stressful and serious the entire time. It’s the kind of film I appreciate more than I revisit. I’m glad I watched it — I just don’t feel the strong urge to experience that anxiety again.
Final Score: 8/10
